About This Game

Neon Serpent is a Snake game on a 20x20 grid. It has a glowing neon look with trail afterglow and smooth animation between grid ticks. The rules are the classic ones. Guide the serpent across the grid, eat energy orbs to grow, and end the run when your head touches your own tail or the arena wall.

Scoring scales with the snake's current length. Each orb is worth 10 base points plus the number of body segments you have at the time. A short snake scores modestly. A long snake in the mid-game multiplies each pickup a lot. Speed starts at a 150ms tick interval and drops by 2ms per orb you eat. It bottoms out at 60ms, which is about 2.5 times the starting pace. There are no bonus orbs or obstacle walls. The only growing threat is your own tail.

You start with 3 segments. On mobile, you use on-screen directional buttons or swipe controls with a 30-pixel threshold. When you die, a red flash appears. A 1.2-second fade follows before the score screen shows up. That pause lets you see where the run went wrong before your next attempt.

History & Background

Snake is older than most people think. The core idea of a growing line that must avoid its own tail appeared in the 1976 arcade game Blockade by Gremlin Industries. A two-player version ran in arcades through the late 1970s. The format stayed popular as a programming exercise through the 1980s. But it hit mass culture when Nokia bundled a Snake game on the Nokia 6110 in 1997. By the time the Nokia 3310 shipped, Snake had reached hundreds of millions of players.

Smartphones briefly made Snake awkward to play since touchscreens didn't fit the original controls well. But the format adapted. Swipe-based controls became standard, and speed-based versions explored mechanics the original grid never could. Neon Serpent adds length-scaled scoring that the Nokia original didn't have. Eating early orbs with a short snake scores less. Threading a longer snake carefully to collect orbs in sequence scores much more.

How to Play

  1. Use arrow keys or WASD to change your serpent's direction
  2. Consume energy orbs to grow longer and increase your score
  3. Avoid hitting your own tail or the arena walls
  4. Grab bonus orbs before they disappear for extra points
  5. Survive as long as possible while managing your increasing length

Tips & Strategy

Each orb is worth 10 plus your current snake length. Building length early means later orbs are worth a lot more.
At 60ms ticks, the snake moves fast enough that you need to plan two turns ahead. Start thinking ahead from the very first orb.
Coil along the grid perimeter in the early game. It keeps the center open as escape space when the snake grows longer.
Don't reverse to grab an orb unless you have a clear exit on the far side. The tail catches up faster than it looks.
Speed drops by 2ms per orb. The jump from 150ms to 60ms is gradual, but runs that reach 70 orbs are playing at nearly double the starting pace.
The death flash gives you 1.2 seconds to see where the run ended. Use it instead of restarting right away. Spotting patterns between runs is how scores improve.
