Word Forge

Word Forge is a daily word puzzle. Each day a new 5-letter word is picked from a list of about 500 common English words. You have six tries to guess it. After each guess, the letters turn colors. Green means the letter is right and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot. Gray means the letter isn't in the word at all. The colored keyboard updates after every guess, so you always know what you've figured out.

Everyone plays the same word each day. That makes it easy to compare results without spoiling the answer. Your current streak and longest streak are saved between sessions, so there's always a reason to come back tomorrow. The word list sticks to common English words — things like CRANE, STORM, and BEACH, not weird five-letter oddities.

Strategy matters as much as knowing words. A strong opening like STARE, CRANE, or SLATE tests five of the most common letters at once. That right away tells you a lot about which letters are or aren't in the word. Many players use a fixed two-word opening to cover ten letters before they start making guesses based on what they know.

The core mechanic comes from Jotto, a pen-and-paper word game played since at least the 1950s. Players guess a secret five-letter word and get feedback on how many letters they matched. The TV game show Lingo started in the Netherlands in 1989 and ran in the US from 2002 to 2007. It adapted the idea for TV by color-coding correct letters for the studio audience.

Wordle was made by Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, as a private gift for his partner in late 2021. He released it publicly in October 2021. By January 2022, over two million people played it every day. The New York Times bought it in February 2022 for a reported seven-figure sum. Its spread was partly fueled by the shareable result grid — those colored squares you can post to social media without giving away the answer.

Word Forge uses the same six-guess, color-coded format Wardle created. The word list is kept approachable while still covering real vocabulary range.
