About This Game

Sequence is a number pattern puzzle in the IQ Forge series. Each of its 20 rounds shows a row of numbers with one value missing. You pick the right answer from four choices before a 12-second timer runs out. The game pulls from 14 different pattern types, split across three difficulty levels that open up as you move through rounds.

Early rounds keep it simple: add the same number each time, multiply by the same number, or count down. Mid-game rounds get more interesting. They bring in alternating patterns, square numbers, Fibonacci-style sums, and a double-then-add rule. The hardest rounds use powers, triangular numbers, and fully split sequences where every other position follows its own separate rule.

Your score rewards both accuracy and speed. A time bonus and a streak bonus stack on top of the 100-point base. The game trains numerical pattern thinking. That means figuring out a rule from a short list of numbers and using it to find the missing one. This skill shows up in many reasoning tests.

History & Background

Number sequence puzzles are among the oldest items in ability testing. They first appeared in intelligence assessments in the early 1900s. The idea: find the math rule from the numbers in front of you. No outside knowledge needed — just reason from what's given.

These tasks became a staple of school aptitude tests and job screening through the mid-1900s. Research showed that people who do well on sequences also tend to do well on working memory tests. That makes sense. You have to hold earlier numbers in your head while trying out different rules. That puts real load on short-term memory.

Online sequence puzzles took off in the early 2000s when IQ-style tests became popular on the web. IQ Sequence builds on that tradition. It uses computer-generated patterns across a clear difficulty ladder, so the challenge keeps pace with you.

How to Play

  1. A number sequence is displayed with a gap marked by '?'
  2. Determine the pattern governing the sequence
  3. Select the correct number from the multiple-choice options
  4. Answer quickly for bonus points — a timer counts down each round
  5. Complete 20 rounds to see your final score and ranking

Tips & Strategy

Start simple: check whether you can just add or subtract the same number between each pair
If that doesn't work, write out the differences between terms — a second pattern often shows up there
Some rounds split the sequence into two parts — try reading every other number as its own separate sequence
Square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16, 25) and Fibonacci-style sums appear in the middle rounds — learn to recognize them
If numbers grow very fast, think powers — sequences like 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 double each time
Use the answer choices to rule things out — one option often proves itself wrong right away
A streak multiplier of 15 extra points per correct answer adds up fast — staying accurate is worth more than hurrying
The 12-second timer is relaxed for easy rounds; save your careful thinking for the hard ones
